Lessons Learned from the Recent Global IT Outage

A group of people working together to fix IT outage

A couple of weeks ago, businesses worldwide were hit hard by a significant IT outage at CrowdStrike, a leading cybersecurity company. From airlines, hospitals, train networks, banks, TV stations, and emergency lines to larger companies, the outage disrupted services essential for daily operations, causing a ripple effect felt across industries. The impact was not just widespread but also urgent, underlining the vulnerability organizations face without proper safeguards.

What caused the IT outage?

Companies worldwide experienced disruptions in the early hours of last Friday following a flawed software update by CrowdStrike. The faulty code was automatically deployed to PCs running one of the cybersecurity firm's programs, which is used by many Fortune 500 companies.

This update was set to help monitor emerging threats. The error in the code caused affected machines to enter a continuous reboot cycle, rendering them entirely offline and triggering Windows' infamous "Blue Screen of Death." Fixing the issue proved challenging as most affected machines operated on basic Windows systems, while Mac and Linux hosts were unaffected by the update.

The aftermath of the IT outage?

As companies slowly work on recovering from the attack, threat actors and phishing campaigns continue to ramp up as they take advantage of last week's IT outage. Cybercriminals have registered dozens of phishing domains related to the outage.

"Due to the financial losses from the widescale outage, many organizations may be exploring ways to resolve their losses through legal action or government assistance, creating a new opportunity for threat actors to strike," SC Media writes. "Business leaders should remain cautious of potential scams as they work to recover from the incident."

How can a business better prepare?

Businesses rely heavily on seamless IT operations to function effectively in today's interconnected digital landscape.
